What is Lorem Ipsum?

Lorem ipsum is a scrambled excerpt from "de Finibus Bonorum et Malorum" (On the Ends of Good and Evil), a philosophical work by Cicero written in 45 BC. The standard lorem ipsum passage has been used as placeholder text in the typesetting industry since the 1500s, when an unknown printer scrambled it to produce a type specimen book. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets, and again in the 1990s with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker.

Why Use Placeholder Text?

When designing layouts, mockups, or UI components, using real content too early causes reviewers to focus on the copy rather than the design structure, typography, and spacing. Placeholder text lets designers, developers, and clients evaluate visual hierarchy, font sizing, and whitespace without distraction.

When to Use Paragraphs vs Words vs Sentences

Paragraphs are best for full-page layout mockups, article templates, and multi-section designs. Words are ideal for filling specific word-count constrained zones like bylines, captions, or labels. Sentences work well for single-line UI components such as table rows, list items, or notification banners where length consistency matters more than paragraph structure.
